In my 20+ years of experience working with children with severe speech sound disorders such as CAS, I have found that it is important to find an activity that is fun and provides lots of opportunities for practice of target sounds. I try to use activities that include the child's personal interests when possible (for example, using game boards with Paw Patrol characters and fun dice to determine the number of repetitions).
I encourage parents to observe therapy sessions when possible to they can see how I get multiple productions of a speech sound sequence. I show how I have students watch my mouth and take turns making a sound sequence. I provide feedback to parents regarding successful target sounds to work on and ways to make practice fun. I explain to parents that it can take many sessions to get success and that we need to encourage that success rather than focus on what the child cannot do. I try to provide a parent with a list of sounds and or words that their child can use to practice at home to build CV, CVC, and CVCV productions (e.g., me, my, mom, mama).
I routinely use picture cards to give children choices and/or to show them the order of activities during a session. I've used voice-output AAC programs, especially TouchChat and Proloquo2Go, to provide consistent models for words during therapy sessions. I have demonstrated the use of these programs to parents as well. I use picture cards and voice-output AAC programs to provide vocabulary for activities (for example, using a playdough page set to help with commenting and requesting during this activity).
