Therapy always begins with building rapport and establishing a trusting relationship with the children I work with, while providing support and guidance to parent. Treatment is individualized to each child and is never a one fits all program. I utilize DTTC in sessions, and provide simultaneous teaching of AAC if needed. Treatment sessions are play-based, encouraging, and confidence building. Continuing education in the field of apraxia is a high priority for me as a clinician. I am passionate about teaching children with apraxia to become confident and effective communicators!
Parents are always welcome to sit in and observe sessions with their child. Input from families is an important part of treatment, as input assists with selecting meaningful and powerful target words. Families are provided with tips on how to incorporate speech practice into their everyday lives, and are provided guidance and a listening ear throughout their apraxia journey.
I have experience with LAMP Words for Life, core boards, and PECS. I have assisted families in starting the AAC process and in obtaining a device. In sessions, I incorporate AAC devices and speech practice simultaneously. Teaching communication through AAC is so important for a child's independence in communication. If necessary for the specific child, it is a piece of the puzzle I will always foster and support, while continuing to direct target CAS.
