It really depends on the child. I have had some, as young as three, who were able to repeat targeted words of importance to them until they mastered them. Others have been resistant to repeated practice, and we play while I model a variety of fun sounds (vocal play). The child often imitates me, I imitate them, and pretty soon the kiddo is imitating a variety of sounds which we can shape into words. Every child is different, and I follow their lead regarding interests and ability/willingness to imitate. I like to send home little books and activities that parents can repeat to help with generalization of skills, as well as getting important words (family names, toys, pets) from families to use in therapy. Your priorities and your child's comfort are important to me.
As mentioned above, I like to include important family words to target and get parents to practice skills at home. I am open to parents sitting in on therapy sessions as long as it doesn't prevent the child from participating. I am happy to answer questions and share strategies and results at any time. I love to celebrate successes!
I love visual supports! I have used everything from cars and action figures (to represent sounds coming together) to high tech apps on the iPad. Visual supports do two things - they help bridge the gap for kids who are unintelligible, giving them a way to communicate until their speech has improved AND they provide a model for the child to help their speech improve. Some kids like using blocks to represent sounds, some really respond to written letters, some need the whole word approach where the word is produced on the iPad and the child can imitate the intonation and number of syllables until they have mastered each sound individually. An added bonus to visual supports is that it helps keep the kiddo's attention and motivates them to keep trying.
