I use the Kaufman SLP kits, 1 and 2, and start with basic syllable shapes, modeling approximations as needed. The complexity is increased gradually as a child demonstrates success with one area. Since I work with young children, we also incorporate the target words into many play-based activities, such as bowling (with target words taped under the pins), board games (with the number of target words corresponding to the number the child rolls/spins), etc. I also work with each family to generate a target word list of words that would be most beneficial for the child in their family environment. I then approximate those words to the child's current level to give them success in communicating with their current skill. We increase the complexity of those words as they demonstrate success at each level. Finding words that are meaningful to the child is crucial in keeping them motivated!
The parents are involved from the beginning. I offer them education on CAS and provide resources and support networks. The parents are asked to generate a list of ten words that would be meaningful to their child at home. I then offer appropriate approximations of those words and we target those in therapy.
I have implemented a total communication approach with my clients with CAS, including sign language, picture communication systems, and switches. Getting these children successful with SOME form of communication has been crucial!
