My overall treatment approach includes motor planning and motor learning methods to target speech gestural movement during speech tasks. The primary goal of my treatment is to develop greater awareness and control in eliciting volitional speech movements for verbal communication. I seek to begin treatment at the current level of this child and first expand stimulable phonemes into word structures, CV, VC, CVC, which allows one to develop a core vocabulary. Core vocabulary is determined based upon the child's current level and achievable speech productions, as well as parent input for functional communication needs within the child's natural environment. Treatment progresses thru expansion to greater word complexities, length and utterance expansion. My treatment approach is strongly based in motor learning principles and thus a great focus of daily treatment is based on repetition to develop automatic and accurate verbal expression.
Parents are involved throughout the assessment and treatment process. Parents are always welcome and highly encouraged to attend therapy sessions actively or through observation. I seek to provide unlimited opportunities for parent interaction, observation and education during and outside of their child's treatment sessions. In addition, tools/resources to support a parent's understanding and involvement in home programming are ongoing throughout intervention.
