I personalize my treatment approaches based on the child, their family, their goals and what the child is capable of. My overall goal in therapy is get the kids talking of course but if that is not possible, using some sort of AAC to supplement speech. I tend to use a combination of approaches, and I like using syllable shapes to build off of-starting with the easiest and working towards more complex and using these syllable shapes in a variety of contexts. I lean towards using more of a Kaufman approach for kids with Apraxia mixed with other things I have learned throughout my career.
I want parents to be completely involved in the therapy process from start to finish. I like for parents to attend therapy sessions, sit in the sessions and actively participate and ask questions. I try to explain what I am doing, why I am doing what I am doing, and ask for parents' feedback on what is important for their child. We work as a team and come up with realistic, measurable goals to strive for in therapy. I provide homework after every therapy session and would like parents to be able to complete this during the week before I see them again.
I have used some sign language for children who are not yet talking and have CAS along with verbal productions. I also have some experience working with different apps on the Ipad to help facilitate speech when it is not intelligible.
