My treatment approach varies depending on the individual I am serving. However, I base my treatment on the principles of motor learning, with a focus on identifying targets and providing initial mass practice. Based on my client's needs and motivation/participation level, I decide which approach (or combination of approaches) to take based on my training (DTTC, PROMPT, Kaufman, etc.). When choosing targets, I not only consider present levels and current abilities/movements, but also functional words that can fit into targets that are needed.
Many of my parents have historically been present during my therapy sessions. When present, they are able to provide me with information on observations/progress seen at home and in the community, as well as observe session techniques and current targets in practice. If parents are not able to be present, I make parent communication a priority at the end of our sessions and occasionally provide video recordings so these parents can see what is happening in the therapy room. I also rely on parents to provide me with information about what currently motivates my clients, their current interests, and any other important information that may be incorporated or relevant to our sessions and treatment.
I have incorporated picture symbols, sign, and speech-generating devices into my treatment for children with CAS. Many of my clients also have had language delays in addition to CAS - so AAC was incorporated not only due to limited intelligibility, but to continue to develop language skills while working on increasing intelligibility. As sessions progress through targets, I have found that the incorporated AAC can be helpful for cuing without a direct verbal model.
