I develop a treatment plan for the specific child. Each child and his/her needs differ, therefore, each treatment plan is different. I begin with word targets that are most useful in their environment. During the session, I often pair target: positive reinforcement at a 1:1 ratio. I use the Kaufman program kits and Moving Across Syllables to elicit targets. Depending on the severity, I begin at the syllable level and move towards CV, CVC and CVCV syllable shapes in words, then move to phrases and sentences.
Parent involvement is key for carryover. Each parent receives a handout on CAS, target list, and examples of how to elicit what is on the target list. Each parent is educated on what CAS is and what their child's goals are. I educate them on what to expect and how important carryover is. They are trained on how to elicit a response, what responses to accept, and how to positively reinforce accepted responses.
