When working for children with CAS, I recommend frequent and intensive therapy services. I do not have a “one size fits all” approach to treating CAS. I believe that all children learn differently. Therefore, I base my treatment approach on the individual need of each child and adapt it to that child to ensure I am providing them with individualized and highly effective interventions. I often start with a combination of motor programming and linguistic approaches, then further individualize as needed to help the child reach their next therapeutic level. I implement a variety of techniques, depending on what works for each child. This includes shaping and sensory cueing (visual, auditory, tactile). During treatment, it is highly recommended that children with CAS participate in high frequency of repetition of targets. When a child’s speech sound production is highly unintelligible, I discuss implementing AAC to provide a means of functional communication while the child is increasing their motor speech skills. AAC not only provides a means of functional communication across a variety of settings for the child, it also provides a constant and consistent model of high frequency words that child uses.
Parents are an integral part of therapy. I provide parents with specific targets to work on across settings. I encourage parents to trial strategies in sessions to ensure they feel comfortable and competent in their child’s treatment plan.
I implement AAC as soon as indicated to provide children with a means of functional communication to express their wants/needs/thoughts/ideas with family and friends. I have experience with low tech AAC (PECS, communication boards, PODD, etc). I also have expereince with high tech AAC (dedicated speech generating devices).
