I individualize my treatment approach for each child to the best of my ability. I traditionally utilize either a) a motor-programming approach that incorporates massed practice of targets to improve the motor plan and help the child learn to independently and spontaneously make sounds and sequences of sounds, b) a behavioral approach such as K-SLP, or c) a linguistic approach such as Cycles by Barbara Hodson. I do use sensory cueing at times, namely gestures and oral placement cues.
Parents play a critical role in treatment, as they are the primary adults in the child's life. At our clinic, parents are always welcome and invited to come into the therapy sessions, where they can be as hands-on or observant as desired. We also offer trainings at our clinic for parents who are new to AAC use and need a better understanding. After every session, children are sent home with a detailed note from the session, as well as a handout with tips and ideas for generalization in the natural environment.
I am LAMP certified, and have extensive experience implementing both low and high-tech systems for children with spoken language impairments. I currently serve children who use picture symbol systems, low-tech voice output devices (ex: GoTalk), as well as children that have dedicated devices with Words for Life. I have my own system that I use with these children and we communicate together using our AAC systems. I use modeling, recasting, and give lots of feedback throughout sessions. I also make use of the prompting hierarchy, as to meet the child where they are in terms of support needed.
