During treatment sessions, I use a variety of treatment approaches, based primarily on the principles of motor learning and Dynamic Temporal and Tacticle Cueing (DTTC). A variety of multi-sensory cues are provided in order to assist the child in producing words accurately. Level of assistance and fading of cues depends on the individual need of each child and mastery level of targeted sounds and words. I work closely together with parents to establish a list of functional target words that are important and relevant to the child and family. I use children’s books with repetitive words and phrases, functional toys, play activities, picture cards, and structured activities. I recommend frequent and shorter sessions when possible, usually 30 minute sessions, 2-3 times a week.
Parents are encouraged to observe and participate in the therapy process in order to promote practice and generalization throughout various environments. Once the child demonstrates understanding of tasks and approaches, the parent is given direct modeling to facilitate prompting and carry over. Education is an ongoing process and verbal and written information is provided to parents regarding tasks and play activities that can be performed at home.
I primarily use low-tech AAC methods such as functional ASL signs, communication boards, and visual schedules. By using these methods, children are able to select preferred foods, toys, books, activities, express basic needs (i.e. go potty). Use of AAC is always paired with speech production/close approximations.
