Initially with treatment, I begin with a pairing process to promote compliance and acceptance to treatment. I will incorporate behavioral principles of learning specifically non-contingent and contingent levels of reinforcement in order to promote compliance with novel targets and continued success with mastered targets. I create a mastered target collection from which I incorporate into therapy for success and ultimately to encourage self-esteem for the client, particularly when novel targets of increased complexity and difficulty are introduced. I begin with creating an inventory of mastered, novel, and stimulable targets from which I select teaching targets. I encourage input from the family so as to include personally relevant information for target selection. I use commercially available products such as Kaufman Kits, K to K vocabulary and Verbs, as well as many handmade products.
