My overall treatment approach to kids with CAS is to always be working towards reciprocal communication and communicative intent. I do an assessment (either formal or informal) to find what the child can do and work from that point, so the child is always working from a basis of success. This involves working from a baseline of voluntary vocalizations that we shape into syllables, words and phrases. I incorporate signs, pictures, and use visual and touch prompts in therapy. In my opinion, therapy for CAS is grounded in creating accurate pathways from the brain to the mouth so the child can produce speech to communicate. This can only be done with repetition and practice.
Parents are typically involved in that they will always know specifically what we are working on and why. Homework will be given after each therapy session. Parents are free to sit in on therapy and participate (or not) depending on their comfort level. I want parents to feel successful in communicating with their children.
