My overall treatment approach to kids with CAS is to carefully select goals and targets based on articulatory movements and sequences that begin with basic targets and build in complexity over time. My focus is on speech movement patterns and often incorporate early developmental targets, for example, early developing sounds if the child can make them and early developing syllable shapes, however, I would not limit target selection to early sounds, as I have many children who can do later developing sounds while still being unable to make earlier developing sounds. I use multimodality stimuli where needed and fade prompts and cues as quickly as possible. I build in practice according to motor learning theory recommendations.
Parents are involved in practicing within daily routines, informing important speech targets (functional and important words within the family and the family's routines), and being coached on ways to help the child. I rely on them for feedback as to how the week went, evaluation of our targets, how well things are working and to partner with me in working with the child.
I have an extensive knowledge of AAC and use it readily while supporting children who are not yet speaking. I used both aided language intervention and teach children how to use a communication app, device or low-tech choice boards, icon displays or picture exchange. Anything I do, I teach parents to do at home during daily routines.
