I always use a multi-sensory treatment approach and follow Principles of Motor Learning when working with children who have CAS. Depending on the cueing/prompting that is needed, I incorporate the following into sessions as needed for successful productions: visual prompts, hand/touch prompts, sign language, and picture stimuli to support verbal speech. As the child progresses, I fade cues accordingly in order to promote independent productions and generalization. Specific examples of CAS treatment approaches I use include: DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing), SMC (Speech Motor Chaining), and ReST (Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment). I also like to incorporate literacy and language skills by selecting themes that combine books and highly motivating games or toys. I am trained in LiPs (Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program) and incorporate that as I see applicable.
Family members are a key element of my therapy process. I always try to implement a family-centered approach by having the family unit help identify goals/functional targets in therapy as well as assist with carryover and generalization of skills outside of the therapy room. During the first session, I establish with the family the child's interests and design therapy activities around that to keep motivation high for maximal productions and practice in therapy.
I have had the opportunity to work with some clients who have been in need of both low and high tech AAC. While working with representatives from various companies and organizations, I have been able to get some high tech devices funded through insurance and scholarships when applicable. I have also been able to successfully implement low tech communication boards as a temporary communication facilitator. While verbal communication is typically the goal for most clients, sometimes a means of functional communication requires AAC while working on improving intelligibility of speech. I have completed continuing education courses and have more familiarity with LAMP (Language Acquisition through Motor Planning) and Tobii Dynavox.
