I employ evidenced-based treatment approaches including PROMPT therapy and Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing. My treatment approach is highly influenced by my experience with and knowledge of PROMPT therapy (PROMPTs for Restructuring Oral Motor Phonetic Targets), extensive continuing education in CAS, and exposure to and experience working with children with CAS and comorbid diagnosis including ASD. This approach is very effective, allowing me to ascertain an appropriate starting point to ensure that treatment does not overload the child's motor system as a linguistically-based approach often does. After assessing the child's motor system and language abilities, I then prioritize what types of motor support (PROMPTs) as well as multisensory cues that I will utilize considering my communication focus and which domain I will focus on (physical -sensory, cognitive-linguistic,and/or social-emotional). I then choose speech motor goals that match my priorities which will then guide my treatment planning. I subsequently choose speech targets to embed within my sessions starting with mass practice and then embedding these targets within functional language-based activities. I also employ Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing and have completed Advanced Training with Dr. Edythe Strand in DTTC. I focus on the primary goal for CAS, which is movements versus phoneme-based approaches. I have completed advanced continuing education through Apraxia Kids, ASHA Conventions, Once Upon a Time Foundation, and have completed Advanced Training with Dr. Edythe Strand in DTTC.
In sum, my overall treatment approach is one that is highly-verbal, highly-visual, multi-sensory and tactile in nature, providing as many opportunities for success as well as motor mapping, planning and programming in order to increase retention and create new motor plans.
I show parents our treatment throughout and at the end of the sessions. I give HOMEWORK! Parents know that homework and carryover of simple techniques makes it easier for the child to warm up motorically for me in the next session. I also keep speech notebook. I show parents simple PROMPTs and support that they can employ as well as simple speech motor drills such as clapping hands to match syllables. I have parents attempt these actions in front of me so that I can coach them.
I have incorporated sign language and use of PECS Picture Exchange Systems in order to use the AAC to assist with the reduction of frustration while using motor treatment to focus on the speech production aspect.
