Following an intake with the parent, Jocelyn performs an evaluation that looks at how a child is currently forming sounds, what types of cues work for them, and what sounds they have in their inventory. From there, Jocelyn works with the family to find highly motivating words that can be easily integrated into daily activity. Therapy involves play, activities of daily living, and all members of the child’s community to ensure the highest level of success.
Parents know their child best, and speech therapy is only a small part of the child’s day, so parents are highly involved in therapy, whether that be providing word lists, or words that were difficult for a child during the week, or with directly interacting with the child using techniques demonstrated by the clinician.
When children have the motivation to speak, but are having difficulty with the motor plan, AAC can be extremely helpful. I work with the child’s family, and other organizations, to find the right device for the child, and if necessary, do the evaluation for the funding packet that the family will need to receive their device through insurance.
