I follow the PROMT speech treatment hierarchy for oral motor and sound production skills. So, if a child is non-verbal, the first goal is control of airflow and mandibular control, which is addressed through talktools material. At the same time, encourage the imitation of phonemes typically heard in babble, with the goal to increase mandibular oscillations in the production of speech sounds heard in typical babble, utilizing principles from the frame content theory. Encourage imitation using a variety of multisensory cues. Once imitation is achieved, work to increase production in VC, CV and CVC forms to develop both functional vocabulary as well as build the necessary underlying motor skill necessary for the production of connected speech sounds for speech production. Treatment varies from child to child, but basically, see where child's functional production skill are, then combine oral motor and production skills that improve the missing pieces in development of the speech motor system.
They must observe and engage therapy sessions and demonstrate that they understand the weekly homework before we send home any new items to practice.
Manual sign and sometimes pictures, I usually let school do that and I work on the motor/production piece.
