At Many Gifts Speech & Language Therapy, the process begins with a free initial consultation via telephone or videoconference. During this consultation, the family can exchange information with Julie Pera, speech-language pathologist and practice owner, and schedule an initial assessment. After the assessment, Julie will make recommendations for therapy goals, session length and frequency, based on current best practices in the field, family needs and preferences, and her extensive professional experience. The treatment plan, including session length and frequency, will be revisited regularly and modified as needed. As children get older, our therapy process may also include direct interventions to support phonological awareness and written language, reading, and spelling.
Julie Pera, speech-language pathologist and owner of Many Gifts Speech & Language Therapy values compassion, collaboration and creativity as the foundation for effective therapy. Caregivers can expect to be treated as a respected member of their child’s team, beginning with the initial consultation and assessment. Caregiver involvement in sessions allows for the ongoing exchange of information about the child’s strengths, areas of interest and daily routines, which is critical for making the therapy process meaningful and motivating. Our intervention process includes direct therapy, opportunities for discussing progress and asking questions, and coaching to support home practice and self-advocacy. It is our hope that this will be the beginning of a lifelong relationship with our clients and families in which they will feel confident about reaching out to us to share accomplishments to be celebrated and concerns to be addressed.
Difficulty producing clear speech can significantly impact a child’s language and conversation skills. Use of communication supports allows the child to experience success with expressing themself, while continuing the hard work of motor speech therapy. Therefore, Julie will guide the family through the process of exploring a variety of communication supports, which may include clarification strategies, gestures/sign language, picture symbols, communication boards/books, and augmentative communication devices. Julie has professional experience using sign language, picture exchange, core boards, thematic boards, Pragmatically Organized Dynamic Display (PODD), and a variety of speech-generating devices/apps, including Touch Chat, ProLoQuo2Go, and PECS-IV+ .
