My treatment approach is to focus on functional communication skills. This may include using AAC while simultaneously targeting speech production. I strive to have therapy targets that are meaningful and powerful for the child. These kids experience a lot of communication failure and I want to help them experience communicative success as much and as early as possible.
Parents are welcome to observe or sit in on any sessions. I also involve them in home practice with their child. Most importantly, I ask the parents for their input on what targets are most important to them and their child and, if possible, work those into therapy.
For kids with extremely low intelligibility, I've introduced AAC as a bridge to help them communicate basic wants and needs while we work on verbal communication. The type of AAC I've used depended on the child, their needs, and their family's preferences.
