During fun and engaging play-based activities, depending on the individual child's changing needs, I use a variety of methods including the multi-modal PROMPT approach, the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol, and elements of hierarchical cueing as seen in DTTC. The caregiver and I select functional words that are meaningful to the child and target words that can be obtained depending on the child's initial strengths and while using typical developmental norms as a guide. I use the principles of motor learning in aiming for the maximal number of accurate productions during sessions. I work with families to help their child achieve short-term and long-term goals by encouraging practice of skills during routines of daily living.
If the session is held in the home, parents are encouraged to participate in our activities as I guide them in giving their child visual and tactile cues to aid in speech production. I share information about typical speech and language development, and coach parents how to elicit functional speech within the child's zone of proximal development and teach them how to reduce scaffolding of cues as the child masters sounds and increases use of spoken vocabulary.
If I see a child at a daycare or preschool, I call the child's parent after each session to discuss strategies to use, as well as discuss strategies with the child's teacher if I have written permission to do so. I also try to incorporate some home visits if possible to teach strategies to the family in person.
I have used mainly low-tech solutions including sign language, communication boards, PECS, and more recently apps on an iPad to supplement speech and language acquistion.
