Communication is the focus - so my first step is to ensure that the child has a meaningful and functional way to communicate core ideas (this may be an AAC system, gestures, or SGD). Understanding the need for high rates of practice, I would set up activities that would allow repeated use of specific syllable patterns that are targeted to the individual child. My focus would be on the motor planning aspect of sound production within a motivating activity.
