Motor based therapy approach: Goals: Clearly differentiated vowels, clear, age appropriate syllable shapes: CV, VC. CVC. CVCV, etc. Hands on therapy with parents involved during session with strong home program. Music, gestures, orofacial tactile sensitivity activities along with activities to facilitate lingual (tongue) movement and jaw stability. Airflow and coordination of airflow with voicing also targeted.
Parents observe and/or participate in sessions depending on age of child. Under 3.5, parents typically act as models and temptations for activities. Therapy activities and/or exercises are demonstrated and parents perform exercises to be done at home. Daily practice is provided for home practice. I encourage parents to make a "Brag Book" of current vocabulary to include photos of family and home objects. May encourage the use of PECS to decrease frustration at home.
I currently do not have any patients with AAC devices. I do use ASL signs with children and would consult with the local SELPA for AAC resources as this is a small community with limited private providers.
