For kids with CAS, I start therapy with what they have - build off of acquired V, VC, CV, CVC combinations. I make sure they are watching my face so they can see my mouth move. We practice the speech movements together and work towards fading out simultaneous productions until they can say the words and phrases independently. The most important factor is repetition, repetition, repetition! The more practice we get in during the session, the greater progress they will make!
Parents are encouraged to be in the therapy room to observe, ask questions and practice with their child during therapy so that they can continue the practice at home. Homework is given weekly or as needed when new skills are acquired. I encourage parents to practice speech skills daily – even 5-10 minutes will make a huge difference in the child’s success!
I have used some sign language to supplement vocabulary and picture symbols to offer choices and help the child communicate wants and needs.
