CAS treatment is different from other speech and language approaches in that the focus is on sequencing and coordination of speech. I use principles of motor learning to guide my treatment. Sessions specific to CAS are short, frequent, involve a small set size of target words, and high volume of correct practice of targets. I select targets based on the child’s current speech abilities and stimulability for more complex structures. I also select targets based on the child’s communicative needs so that the speech he/she is learning is ecologically valid.
Parents play a vital role in the therapy process. I encourage parents to work with me, take part of my sessions, and collaborate with me on strategies they find useful. Parents are also excellent collaborators in regards to target selection and highlighting other needs they see across contexts. Parents are part of the treatment team and I actively seek to collaborate, share, and listen to their knowledge of their child.
AAC plays a vital role in supporting communication in children with CAS. I spend most of my day in mixed group therapy, so I use low-tech communication boards on a daily basis to actively engage all communicators in multi-modal communication. My teaching team is trained to provide aided modeling of core communication across class routines and activities. Families that are part of group therapy all get their own communication boards and training in simple strategies to support their children’s communication. I have also used a high-tech system in my classroom for a child with CAS. For individual clients, I work with the families and other therapists that are part of the team to identify the best system (high or low-tech) to meet the child’s needs and have developed relationships with local AAC representatives in the area so that I can trial devices with clients to find the best device/system for the child.
