My overall treatment to CAS is founded in motor-learning principles. Sessions specific to CAS are short, frequent, involve a small set of target words, and a high volume of correct practice of speech targets. I select targets based on the child’s current speech abilities and stimulability for more complex structures. I also select targets based on the child’s communicative needs so that the speech he/she is learning is functional to them. Treatment goals are based on helping the child learn movement gestures for words and phrases vs. learning specific sounds.
I encourage parents to observe as many sessions as they can! I feel strongly that training and equipping parents to work with their children is incredibly meaningful and helps children progress at a faster rate. I may see a child 3 times a week for 30 minutes, but parents spend much more time with their children and thus can have such a huge impact in their children’s progress and overall success. The parent component is critical!
I've used both low and high tech devices for children with CAS. I've used AAC devices to work on a number of goals including use and practice of functional words and word shapes. I've also used AAC devices to build functional phrases that the child can use in their every day life. In other instances, I've used these devices to practice best word approximations for "favorite" items such as family members, food, toys, etc. and to request/talk about these items in functional phrases.
