I use a multi-sensory approach, utilizing a specific protocol such as Kaufman, immediate feedback, tactile cues, visual cues, melodic intonation, and high intensity motor planning therapy. I utilize low tech and high tech AAC depending on the severity of the child's speech disorder. I recommend high intensity, shorter sessions, with a weekly frequency of 3-5 sessions per week.
Parents are given home work to address with the student between sessions. This may include a repetitive story that the child has been working on, a worksheet with the targeted sound (along with instructions of the proper oral motor visual and tactile cues), or something that I want to carry over to the home environment such as the use of functional words "hi or bye" etc. Progress is discussed frequently and concerns are always heard and addressed. If the use of AAC is involved then parents may need additional training to carry over the use to the home setting.
I have previously worked in a school district as the assistive technology specialist for the district. I have extensive knowledge and training in the process of AAC including evaluation, funding, implementation, caregiver training and school advocacy. I work with patients and their families throughout the entire process to ensure the best outcomes.
