At Pediaprogress, we follow the Principles of Motor Theory to develop a unique approach for each child who has childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Our treatment for children with CAS focuses on developing the ability to select, plan, organize, and initiate motor patterns for speech. We individualize treatment and encourage self-monitoring of skills at all ages. Prosody development is prioritized from the start of treatment. Working directly with occupational therapists and physical therapists, we support children's sensory integration and motor development. Multisensory cueing strategies are individualized for each child’s needs, including visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic and cognitive cues. We utilize the Dynamic Temporal & Tactile Cueing (DTTC) approach for children who present with characteristics of severe CAS at the beginning stages of treatment. When appropriate, we incorporate augmentative and alternative communication approaches, including sign language and low tech and high tech assistive technology, to support a child's communication development.
At Pediaprogress, parents and caregivers collaborate with speech-language pathologists during the child’s treatment. Strategies are provided for caregivers to support generalization of the child’s skills at home.
I have extensive training in using sign language and incorporate sign language as a visual and kinesthetic cue whenever possible. I have used pictures and communication devices when appropriate to supplement speech and language therapy. I have experience using the communication apps: Proloquo2Go, LAMP, and TouchChat.
