I look at overall intelligibility and decide if AAC is appropriate. I look at functional communications at home and school to see where the most breakdown occurs. Then I look at my assessment data to determine the best places to begin that will give the most bang for the buck!
I am an NDT trained therapist and my approach includes looking at the whole body as I work toward speech production. This includes posture and respiratory control for phonation.
Parents may stay in the sessions with younger children if it works for the parent and child and allows for therapy to be successful. When parents are not in the session they are given a brief synopsis at the end of the session and given home practice activities after each visit.
I have been using AAC with children with CAS for over 25 years - well before it was popular to do so! AAC alllows language to develop as speech production is addressed. It reduces frustration and is accessible to all communication partners in a child's life. My clinical experience has shown AAC to be a facilitator of speech production.
