The treatment approach that we have at our clinic is multi-faceted. We offer clients the opportunity to participate in 6-week blocks of intensive intervention to aid in their independent articulatory movements and their speech-sound development. We begin by selecting real-word targets and we practice them in a blocked format. We initially offer a high level of cueing and PROMPTs per target to lay the foundation for successful generalization. Once the client demonstrates in increased independence in their productions, we begin to randomize trials.
Parents are the people that drive our therapy process. We invite them into every session. We discuss home practice as early and often as possible to aid in generalization. We describe our process of supporting their child's speech/language output and add meaning to it, no matter how intelligible it may be. We also provide daily feedback for parents about strengths and challenges for their child.
In our practice, we use AAC to augment speech production. We build up language by pairing symbols and signs with speech targets. High tech AAC or speech generation devices allow clients to hear the target word in a different modality to support their feedback loops.
