Depending on the child's needs my evaluation process may vary from unstructured and play-based to formal administration of an apraxia evaluation and a standard articulation test. I will collect a speech sample from your child, complete a thorough oral motor examination and may also look at their feeding skills. My therapy depends on the abilities of the child and at the lowest level may start at imitating oral or body movements to lay the foundation for imitation of speech in the future. It then may quickly progress to the simplest syllable structures (on, eye, me, no) and advance appropriately to multisyllabic words, phrases and conversational speech over time. At the same time we will focus on functional words that are important to the child, such as a sibling's name, yes, no, and/or a favorite toy. My sessions are mostly very structured and again, depending on the child's needs we may need to address the strength, range of motion and coordination of the lips, cheeks, tongue and jaw. We have fun, but they work hard!
