A thorough evaluation helps determine if CAS or suspected CAS is appropriate diagnosis. Involvement of other factors considered such as sensory-motor differences, tongue tie/lip tie, or feeding difficulties. Therapy recommended 2-3x per week for most kiddos. We often start with sounds and word shapes kids already have. Working with parents, we pick out a set of highly functional words or word approximations for 2-3 different play activities and work to get at least 60-100 productions of those targets during the session. Use PROMPT and other cues to facilitate oral placements. We will consider augmentative communication early in the treatment process, both low and high-tech, to support language goals and reduce frustration.
Parents are involved in either each session or every other session to learn how to choose words or sounds during play activities as well as how to modify for easier targets (break it down by movements) or fade supports.
I have used both static visuals as well as dynamic display SGD for children with CAS. AAC has been helpful for reducing frustration, giving a child a way to cue themselves, as well as support language and literacy development beyond their verbal production skills.
