First and most importantly, I believe the family has to be involved in all aspects of our therapy and are essential for optimal outcomes. I encourage all parents to watch therapy, help determine word lists and provide practice at home. In therapy I use Dynamic Temporal and Tactal Cueing (DTTC) along with some aspects of PROMPT. I am a firm believer in making therapy fun but also attempt to get the maximum number of repetitions of our target words in our sessions. I also encourage alternative forms of communication to augment speech such as signing and iPads equipped with apps to help bridge the gap when necessary.
Parents sit in the therapy sessions, help with decisions regarding words to target and goals to address. They also are asked to have a notebook for speech words and for communicating with other professionals. They are asked to practice either in short "pop-up" sessions or 10 minute structured sessions on a daily basis.
I strongly believe in the power of using AAC to help transition a child into spoken words. I provide and highly encourage families to use the customized pictures and picture boards that are provided to help facilitate their child’s ability to communicate his/her needs at home and school. An iPad with AAC apps and parental training is also used to facilitate a child’s ability to communicate.
