I use a multi-sensory approach to treatment throughout play based therapy sessions providing visual and tactile cues as appropriate for each child and fading them as soon as quickly as possible. I collaborate with parents to encourage and facilitate effective and fun home programs. I explore AAC options for children who are unintelligible.
Parents attend a portion of each therapy session, often attending the entire session when possible. Parents are coached during the session and are in constant collaboration with me in helping choose appropriate and meaningful target words and home activities to decrease frustration and stress for each family. I teach parents specific signs early on in treatment so that their child can communicate effectively until they are better able to verbally communicate.
I consider and use AAC for all children who don't have an effective way to verbally communicate, whether they have CAS or other diagnoses. We have used iPad apps and communication notebooks/boards. We have used dedicated devices. I also encourage parents of young children to sign with their children.
