I use an individualized multimodal approach to treat CAS. I analyze child’s language samples, and formulate goals based on my informal assessment. The goal of therapy is to increase intelligibility to familiar and unfamiliar listeners. During therapy sessions, I target goals and recognize the need for repetition is key for children to translate sound combinations into their motor memory. I use tactile-kinesthetic prompts and PROMPT (PROMPTS for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) to cue children, when visual and verbal models are not sufficient. If decreased intelligibility is noted, I would discuss the possible use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative communication). AAC has the power to enhance verbal speech production and gives the child a way to communicate wants and needs when speech intelligibility is compromised. Please contact me for more information regarding treatment plans, as each plan I create for a child is highly individualized.
I am trained in PROMPT, Oral Placement Therapy, and Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing.
Parents are an integral component to my therapy sessions to promote generalization of skill. When new words/ word combinations/ phrases are introduced I will let the parent know so they can practice with their child when therapist is not around. The need for repetition is key for children to translate sound combinations into their motor memory. When parents are involved, progress tends to be more rapid. Parents know their child best, and being part of the therapeutic team is essential.
I have extensive experience in implementing low tech and high tech AAC with children with CAS. It should be noted, that speech intelligibility often times increases when AAC is used to augment speech production.
