My treatment approach varies. Throughout many trainings, I’ve been able to increase the tools in my Apraxia "tool box". I may use PROMPT with DTTC for one child, but then use ReST for another. I talk about using AAC with many of my families, so we may choose to incorporate technology so they can communicate as we are working on speech output. The best thing to do is build repertoire while figuring out the greatest needs, and then utilizing the best tool for success. It always goes back to the motor planning aspect - looking to expand the types of words and sentences, while providing the optimal amount of trials and feedback. I may use PROMPT or K-SLP for one child, but then use DTTC or ReST for another. The best thing to do is build repertoire while having a grasp on where they are currently functioning, and then utilizing the best tool for success.
Parents are an integral part of speech therapy. I may be the “expert in speech and language”, my parents are the expert on their child! I view treatment of any speech sound disorder as a “team approach” and parents are THE most important part of that team. Parents are welcome into my therapy room and I aim to provide them with as many strategies as possible to make their child successful. We work on functional vocabulary through different treatment methods, and I rely on parents to help determine what is most important to the child as well as the family. As a child progresses with sounds in words, we transfer the practice of those words to the family, with them providing me with feedback on their success.
AAC can help significantly with decreasing the frustrations of children until they can communicate efficiently verbally. Depending on the child, family, and school support, I've used both light and high tech. I've had significant training in both-I'm comfortable utilizing functional boards, PODD, Proloquo2go, LAMP, Dynavox systems, Prentke Romich.
