Written language could prove to be a daunting task for a child with CAS who is already struggling with organizational skills, word order (syntax, ) and meaning (verbal semantics.) Communicating through gestures and vocalizations is a skill that we are predisposed to do. Written language on the other hand, is not. Written language requires the use of all of our executive functions: the ability to plan, organize, and reflect on our own cognitive strategies on paper. This webinar will demonstrate the benefits of addressing written language in a small group setting with children who have CAS and associated language learning struggles. We will show how to develop this group in various pediatric settings such as schools or outpatient clinics using video examples of groups in action, pictures, handouts and examples of participants’ written text. “The WRITE Power” is an innovative program designed in a logical sequence to teach school-age children how to use written language skills to effectively express their thoughts and ideas. Group participants are taught how to differentiate types of expository text and to identify the main ideas, supporting details, and conclusion of pre-written paragraphs. Through the use of graphic organizers and word webs, students are taught to gather, organize and generate ideas for writing. At the conclusion of the six week class, students are given the tools to successfully develop written paragraphs that flow in an organized manner.
