I start with simultaneous productions of words with or without prompts as needed. I incorporate visual, verbal, and tactile prompts as needed to help the child be successful. Simultaneous productions are faded to a mime, and, if successful, direct imitation is used. Once direct imitation is mastered, delayed imitation is used to facilitate generalization to spontaneous speech. I vary my use of feedback for the child's productions to help the child try to self-assess the production. Prompts fade in and out as needed for success. I strive to reach at least 100 productions per session. In addition, I try to see my students at least 3 times per week to work on speech specifically.
Parents come to monthly clinics to discuss student progress, see how sessions are run with their child, and to give suggestions. Books of mastered words are sent home to foster home practice. Emails and videos are used to help the parent understand how to help their child's speech and language.
I use AAC all the time. I have introduced students to PECS, Proloquo2Go, Prentke-Romich devices, and Dynavox devices. I use AAC to help my students hear a consistent auditory model of words and to reduce frustration as we work toward functional speech.
